I went with my friend to Urban Outfitters a few days ago.
It was boxing week, I know...I am brave.
Anyways, I don't really like Urban Outfitters.
They DO have nice clothes, but everything is always so overpriced.
I figured that since we were going during boxing week (we actually went right on boxing day) then everything would be cheaper.
The farthest they went was $10 off.
Every time I saw something I liked, I knew that everytime I wore it, I would feel some sort of pain.
Then, I saw the vinyl rack.
Noone else was even close to it (what a shock), but I thought I'd take a look.
There were a lot of re-issues, but it was ostly full of new bands that are cool (not sarcastic) for putting their albums on vinyl.
A lot of these bands do it because they were either inspired by the records they heard as kids, or they like the sound of records (because it actually is the best sound).
In the end I bought the debut album from the band Girls (actually two guys, one who was born into a cult, great band), called Album.
Yes, they called their first album, Album.
They really are a great band.
Check them out.
In fact, the record just stopped.
Good timing.

SPIN and REM
January Spin is out!!!!!!!!!!
It's an amazing issue.
Seems like the list of Top 40 Albums of the Year was taken right out of my CD collection.
Band of the Year: Kings of Leon
Too many good things to list here....check their website if you're broke or are "going green."
P.S. Last night I realized that R.E.M songs are somewhat interchangeable. Of course, they are very different, but since they have the same sound, it fucks you up.
I started humming Orange Crush, but by the time I got to the chorus, I was singing It's The End Of The World As We Know It. By the time you get to the bridge, you're onto Eloctrolite, and once the song is nearing end, you're singing the outro to E-Bow The Letter.

Lou...
Lou Reed
Such a flippin asshole
But such a flippin genius
Listen to his Velvet Underground and his solo stuff
And just for fun, read his interview with Spin Magazine...its fun (and obnoxious) to read how annoying he is

Late of the Pier
Passion Pit
Animal Collective

Crooked Teeth by Death Cab For Cutie
It was one hundred degrees
As we sat beneath a willow tree
Whose tears didn't care
They just hung in the air
And refused to fall, to fall
And I knew I'd made a horrible call
And now the state line felt
Like the Berlin wall
And there was no doubt
About which side I was on
'Cause I built you a home in my heart
With rotten wood, it decayed from the start
'Cause you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
No you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
I braved treacherous streets
And kids strung out
On homemade speed
And we shared a bed
In which I could not sleep at all'
Cause that night the sun in the trees
Made the skyline look
Like crooked teeth
In the mouth of a man
Who was devouring, us both
You're so cute when you're slurring your speech
But they're closing the bar and they want us to leave
And you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
No you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
I'm a war of head versus heart
And it's always this way
My head is weak, my heart always speaks
Before I know what it will say
And you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
No you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
And you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
There were churches, theme parks and malls
But there was nothing there all along.
*basically just listen*
Feel good song.
Makes you think, have you ever had love?
And if you have, was it real?
What happened to REAL love?

You learn something new every day...
Two things actually.
1) I'm in such an eighties mood today. I'm also in somewhat of an eighties mood (Prince is my hero), but today was nuts. Every time something good happend, I had the urge to jump in the air with my fist pumped while FAME is playing. Once I was in my house, I did this. I'm getting the feeling that this is annoying.
2) My mom just went 1000000000 points up on the cool scale. I knew she had gone to two Genesis concerts (which is sweet), but I found out that she went to Cat Stevens too. Cat Stevens is one of my favourite all time musicians. And now, if I ever want to see him, I have to listen to his Yusaf Islam music too. Thi is unfair.

Embryonic
Quick review cuz I'm tired.
Embryonic---The Flaming Lips
Maybe it's not as optimistic as their usual albums, but Wayne and the gang still keep up their jazz infused psycadellic pop-rock, that makes them so loved.
It's slightly darker, but listen to the lyrics, enjoy the tunes, and I guarantee, you will be happy.
And if you're not, ask yourself this question: Do I have a soul?
Goodnight and good luck.
Sainthood
Song by song review.
Thats easy.
Lets go.
1)Arrow---starts off with screeching guitars...is this Tegan and Sara? Then, their eerie harmonies and instrumentals start off. Yes, it is them. A great catchy song. It was honestly stuck in my head for two days straight.
2) Don't Rush---The songs feels like it's going in a loop...but in a good way. Not one of my favourites though. It feels a little robotic during the verses, and gets a little human during the chorus. Not amazing, but not bad.
3) Hell---The first single. You can tell. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it does sound the most commercial. There's really nothing bad about the song. The verses give a good buildup to a very catchy chorus. The tune is very memorable. Bad song. Hell hell no, hell hell no. (Listen to the song, then you'll understand.)
4) On Directing---Has a very Tegan and Sara beginning, with the acoustic guitar, and then the drums and voice starting at the same time. This is forsure the catchiest song on the album. It's great. And when you listen, actually listen. Great lyrics. Favourite song on the album.
5) Red Belt---Harder beginning again. Verse is decent. Just decent. I'm sitting waiting for the chorus. Almost there. Halfway through the second verse. I can feel it coming. Ah, here it is. A little repetetive, but better then the boring verse. The lyrics are great, just not a great melody. Oh well. It happens.
6) The Cure---This is a good recovery from the last bomb. The verse has a sick set-up, and the chorus is short and sweet. Good song. I could see this being a single at some point. We shall see.
7) Northshore--- Yes! Upbeat and noisy. Great riff, and amazing lyrics and vocals. The chorus is a little too short, but it's a good two-minute song.
8) Night Watch--- This track is great. Very eerie beginning that's amazing. There's an unneccessary guitar interlude, but then it goes to a great chorus. The instrumentals are sometimes off in this song, but it is a very good song.
9) Alligator--- Stickly sweet beginning, with catchy melody. Sounds like one of their older tune, with newer lyrics. It's a pretty great song. Some people have been complaining about not getting into this song, but I think that it's a very good tune. Opinions differ so much.
10) Paperback Head--- Very spacey. From the instrumentals, to the vocals, it's very...out there. It's not bad, but I don't love it. You may though.
11) The Ocean--- Slightly upbeat tune. I could see people not liking this, can seem a bit whiny at times, I think it's good though. It's a very sweet song.
12) Sentimental Tune--- This is good. Gives a feel as if it's soon the end of the album. Don't really know how to explain this one. Check it out though. I think you'll be pleasantly surpirsed. Great lyrics.
13) Someday--- Finally. It was a great short album. So is this a good ending? Yes. Very strange feeling right at the start. But the vocals are very pure, the instrumentals are natural and the overlaying at the random points in the verse make you feel all warm inside.
Songs to listen to: Arrow, Hell, On Directing, The Cure, Alligator, Sentimental Tune, Someday.

my bad
I never disliked Death Cab For Cutie...but I never liked them.
Heres why,
Yes, they're "indie" if you wanna use that term, but they were a type of "indie" that people had on their iPod for the sake of having them on their iPod.
The kids who had shit like Lady Gaga and Sean Kingston, would put Death Cab on their iPod to feel less generic and more "indie."
I now realize that they are a very good band. I only know two of their albums (Plans and Narrow Stairs) but they are definitely a good band. Really getting into them now. Feel bad for judging.
My bad.
Fav track: Crooked Teeth (off of Plans)

Finally....
My last post went a little screwy...not sure why...
Anywho...here we go
I'm gonna do this lazily and not give anything away.
The main kid who played Max (Max Records) was freaking incredible, especially for a 10 year old. (guessing the age.)
The wild things looked amazing. They looked real!!! Jim Henson Workshop did an amazing job...and so did whoever did the CGI on their faces.
The sets were incredible. The music was so suiting.
Everything about this movie was good!!!
Can't think of one bad thing.
WARNING: A little sad.
Quote of the movie: "I'll eat you up I love you so."
see it now
soundtrack
I'm still stunned from last night...actually in awe.
I'm gonna do seperate reviews for the movie and the soundtrack for two reasons.
1 Im lazy
2 I have to have a two hour preperation period for reviewing the actual movie.
So...here we go.
Karen O and the Kids (like I said before, Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer and guest artists.)
The guest artists are actually an elite bunch of musicians:
Brian Chase--Drummer for Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Nick Zinner---Guitarist/synths for Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Imaad Wasif---solo artist and Yeah Yeah Yeahs former touring guitarist
Bradford Cox---from Deerhunter
Aaron Hemphill---from Liars
Jack Lawrence---from The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather
Dean Feritia----from The Raconteurs, The Waxwings, Queens of the Stone Age, and The Dead Weather
Such an amazing group!!!
The sountrack is an eerie, folkie, hypnotic mix of songs, all dipped in sugar.
Karen O's creaky voice and the top notch acoustics make for an amzing mix.
Listen to all the tracks
No joke
Go
Now
And see the movie
Thanks
*the pictures are a promo shot of Karen O wearing Max's costume and holding a guitar
and of a promo shot of the sountrack

Here Is Where They Are
I'm seeing Where The Wild Things Are today!!!
So f*ckin excited
I've literally been counting down the days since july.
Anywho, I'll review it later.
And the soundtrack, which is done by Karen O and the Kids.
If you live under a rock, Karen O is the lead singer of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Kids are some special guests performing with her.

Read and then listen/listen and the read
Read these lyrics and then listen to the song
or
Listen to the song and read the lyrics
or
do it at the same time
Whichever way you do it, DO IT!!!
Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe
by Okkervil River
It's just a bad movie, where there's no crying
handing the key to me, in this Red Lion,
where the lock that you locked in the suite says there's no prying.
When the breath that you breathed in the street screams there's no science.
When you look how you looked then to me, then I cease lying and fall into silence.
It's just a life story, where there's no climax.
No more new territory, so pull away the imax.
In the slot that you sliced through the scene there was no shyness.
In the plot that you passed through your teeth, there was no pity.
No fade in: film begins on a kid in the big city.
And no cut to a costly parade (that's for him only!)
No dissolve to a silver of grey (that's his new lady!)
Where she glows just like grain on the flickering pane of some great movie.
It's just a house burning, but it's not haunted.
It was your heart hurting, but not for too long, kid.
In the socket you spin from with ease there is no sticking.
From the speakers your fake masterpiece is serenly dribbling.
When the air around your chair fills with heat, that's the flames licking.

Beneath the clock on the clean mantelpiece. It's got a calm clicking.
Like a pro at his editing suite takes two weeks stitching up some bad movie.

Cheating?
Ever since I figured out how to put music from my computer onto my phone, I've been obsessed with free mp3s.
If I had an iPod, I would've loved them sooner, but I don't...so I'm a bit slow.
Anyways, that's why I was very happy when Vampire Weekend put their new song up for free (already talked about this.)
And I was even happier when I found out that The Pains of Being Pure At Heart put up their new song, Higher Than The Stars up as a free mp3.
It is now on my phone.
Amen.

Thanksgiving...
Long Weekends should be a time to relax.
Wrong.
Teachers believe the opposite and decided to give tons of homework just to be cruel.
They do this even though the TDSB has a rule not to give homework on long weekends.
Clearly, the TDSB strongly enforces the rule.
This is just reason 42/1000000000000 of why I hate the school board.
On the upside : MIKA concert monday!!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

2 Great Pieces of News!
1) Vampire Weekend. New Album in january called Contra. That's amazing in itself.
But wait, there's more!
They released their first single from it. It's called Horchata.
Sounds like good ol Vampire Weekend.
Which is good, so listen.
(It really grows on you, I listened to it 7 times in a row!)
p.s. it's on theire website and on youtube.
2) For those who watch Glee, last night's episode was great. The storylines were cheesy (as usual) but the performances were amazing.
Especially the girls' mashup of Walking on the Sunshine and Halo (my guiltiest of guilty pleasures!)
so...listen
to both
good

Am I the only one?
I Should Calm Down

I should calm down
Here's why
I always buy cds (no iPod, due to sound...ill explain in another post at some point), but recently ive bought alot of cds
well, only three.
but three in the past 10 days.
which is alot.
i need to stop spending my money, cuz I would like to go to college.
P.S. if you were wondering, the cds were Mika--The Boy Who Knew Too Much, Vampire Weekend--Vampire Weekend, and Phoenix---Wolfgang Amadeus Motzart

Beautiful Girls...Amazing Picture
I honestly don't get that much feedbcak.
That's a lie.
I don't get feedbcak at all.
But I'm worried that I might get bad feedback for the picture I just put up, so here's my explanation.
I love Drew Barrymore. She's a great actress (and a great director, go and see Whip It). She's also an amazing girl for overcoming her drug problem, and coming out as bisexual.
I love Ellen Page. She's also a great actress (see Juno, Hard Candy, and Whip It). She can play any role, and she is very comfortable. She's straight (as far as the public knows), but when Marie Claire did a photoshoot of her and her BFF Drew Barrymore, she was perfectly fine with doing a full-on kiss. And it's great.
I don't mean that in a creeper way, I mean that in a "that's a really beautiful picture" way.
So don't hate me.
Just try to enjoy the picture.

Homophobia
Short and sweet
lets go
What is the point?
I really do respect peoples' opinions, but this is just ignorance.
There are so many gays lesbians bis trans queers etc. out there, that there is honestly no reason to be ignorant.
I guess it doesnt follow religion.
But it doesnt follow any religion!
So, to any homophobs out there...pick up your bag of douche and look in the mirro, and think to yourself, "What if someone close to me is offended by what I say and do?"
Try it,
It might be good for you.
As for coming out, do it when it feels right.
Even if you're young.
If it feels like its buliding up inside, and it's the only thing you can think about, then maybe it's time.

This may seem a little random, but it's my blog...so just deal with it. (that was unintentionally harsh...)
Anywho...I was bored so I decided to go through some of the apps on my phone (my phone is shitty btw, so when I say apps, I mean like old school games, and things like notepad.)
Well, speaking of notepad, I was looking through notes I had written, and I came across this one.
*note before you read this...I don't have an iPod, so when I say albums, I DO mean albums (vinyl and/or cd)
here's the note:
Albums to get (not very urgent)
of Montreal-The Sundlandic Twins
Cage the Elephant
Matt and Kim-Grand
Eels
Down With Webster
Those Dancing Days
quite random...i realize...i just thought id share this
btw, if you don't know these bands, check them out...all worthwhile

Jack White=God?
I'm too lazy to properly blog right now...so this post may be half list and half lazy. (and just explanations)
The title: I don't know how much I believe in God...but at the times that I do..I just believe that Jack White is the one who controls the people.
(that may be a little over exagerrated...but oh well!)
Ten Reasons Why Jack White Is Fuckin Incredible
1) The White Stripes (band #1)
2) The Raconteurs (band #2)
3) The Dead Weather (band #3)
4) All three are great fuckin bands
5) He collaborated with Alicia Keys (yes, the R&B artist) on an awesome James Bond theme song
6) he was in "It Might Get Loud"...havent seen it yet, but its supposed to be good
7) married to a model
8) he themes his bands with colours; the white stripes are red white and black; the dead weather are black white and yellow
9) owns a record company/recording studio: Third Man Studios
10) Decides to play in every fuckin Canadian province with Meg (his sister? ex wife? whatever...) and then makes a film out of it.
11) (just for fun) the film premiers at TIFF, and during a Q&A about it, he jumps on stage and impersonates Kanye...fuckin amazing!
Jack White Discography (just for funsies!)

*sorry this ran on so long...just expressing my love*
**the pic is all of jack white's bands
Trust Me On This One
I know I said that I would blog about Jack White and why he is God, and I will this weekend (probably.)
Anywho, the reason I've gone off topic is cuz I have to express my love for Monsters of Folk.
Who are Monsters of Folk you may be asking.
Well, they're a "supergroup" (hate that term), consisting of folk star M.Ward, Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst, and My Morning Jacket's Jim James and Mike Mogis.
If you don't know who these people are, please check them out, and check out the awesome band they have put together.
Listen to all the tracks, but my favourite is "Say Please."

H&M?
I'm wearing a very H&Mish outfit today.
This isn't normal for me.
I'm more of a kensington/band shirt kinda girl.
But today I'm wearing purple jeans and a yellow knit sweater.
But I'm comfortable.
That's all that matters right?
Labels suck.
P.S. I realize this has nothing to do with music...I'll try to stick to new music from now on. I promise.
P.P.S. Upcoming post: Why Jack White is a fuckin incredible musician. And everything. I vote him for president.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart...so cute...love them to pices
Yes, I realize that The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's debut album came out in February.
And yes, I do realize that it's October now.
But I love them.
So I thought talking about their album would be good.
Okay?
Okay.
Let's go.
Song by song review.
1.) Contender---The song starts with a wailing guitar, that suddenly goes to a fuzzy rock guitar. But the sweet vocals of Kip Berman (singer, guitarist) and Peggy Wang (vocals, keyboards) come in shortly and the melody is very soothing.
2.) Come Saturday--- Kipe Berman thrashes out his guitar and drummer (Kurt Feldman) and bassist (Alex Naidus) really know how to rock it out on this track. The verses are very slow, but have a great tune, and as the song builds, the chorus gets louder and the band really rocks it out.
3.) Young Adult Friction --- Fuckin great song. Honestly dont know what else to say about it. oh yeah...watch the video. You'll fall in love with the band...they're so fuckin cute. Pardon my language, but honestly. Fuck.
4.) This Love Is Fucking Right!--- To start, the title is great. Pains always have their instruments louder then their vocals, but it sounds good (youll get it when you hear it.) Anyways, it really works with this tune.
5.) The Tenure Itch--- Very good song overall. This was the first song I heard by them, and it really turned me onto them. This band just doesn't screw up.
6.) Stay Alive--- Nice acosutic(er) song. Really nice. Not completely acoustic...but if you listen you'll understand.
7.) Everything With You--- Another super cute video for this song. Another cute song. Why isn't this song more known?
8.) A Teenager In Love--- Same riff of Modern Love by David Bowie? Not for the whole song, but it does start like that. Oh well. Its my fav song from the album. The lyrics are great. Here's an example: "But you don't need a friend when your a teenager in love, with christ and heroin."
9.) Hey Paul--- Pretty hard song for them, but the melody really is catchy. Great tune.
10.) Gentle Sons--- Not one of my favourites, but I will admit that it is a good tune. And guess what? That's it. It is a good finale.
Tracks worth listening to: Young Adult Friction, This Love is Fucking Right!, The Tenure Itch, Everything With You, A Teenager in Love,
My number one complaint about when people review this band is that they compare them to either The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine or Field Mice. How about this?
They're original.
Deal with it.
Overall: Please listen to this album. Really, that's all I ask.
My rating: 4/5... I seem really easy on bands...but trust me, I can be harsh.

Loud.
That is how I would describe Muse's fifth studio album, The Resistance. The English alternative rock band are, well, quite alternative, fusing classical music into their already synth heavy anthems. This equation may not seem to add up, but Muse makes it happen.
I've never listened to much Muse music. Sure, I've heard of them, and I've heard a few of their songs on occasion, but I'm not a huge fan. Until I listened to The Resistance. Drummer, Dominic Howard, wants you to badly hear his drum set on every track, and he bashes it out so you can. Christopher Wolstenholme gives an edgy and sometimes very simple bass riff, that keeps your room vibrating and your ears bleeding (in a good way) long after you've stopped listening. And then there's Matt Belamy. Sigh. He is the genius behind The Resistance. The lead singer, the guitars, some keyboards, a few synths and some programming. All Matt Belamy. Oh yeah, did I mention that he wrote every song on the album and decided to infuse classical music. What a fucking cool guy.
Songs to listen to: Listen to the whole album. If you're for some reason incapable of doing so, listen to "Uprising", "Guiding Light", and the very Queen-like "United States of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)."
This album get four out of five in my books. So buy it. Or download it. Or just listen to it. But do it. Do it now.
